Italy’s rich vinous history stands among the most significant of any country on earth. Indeed, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the efficacy of the Roman legions over 2,000 years ago, as the empire established grape cultivation as a staple of each conquered region. Despite their significant contribution to European wine, two of the most renowned grapevines remained primarily confined within their national borders.
Tonight, we’ll take a deep-dive into two of Italy's most emblematic grapes — the dynamic duo of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. We shall uncover their origins and history and discuss how wine styles have changed from pre-Renaissance to modernity. Let’s wade through blood and fog, tasting sub-regional representations spanning traditional to modern expressions of these most singular and noble varieties.
