Lammershoek
Lammershoek has a common South African history, and that is that it is an historic winery whose production suffered through apartheid. The vineyards were planted in 1750, and to interesting varieties at that! Story has it that at the time Desiderius Poncrácz, the man behind the “famous” South African sparkling wine, encouraged them to plant unique varieties such as Harselvelu (Tokaji-origin) and Tinta Barocca (Port origin), as well as many Rhône grapes. Although these varieties still exist, they are not the original plantings as many of those were lost through the 20th Century. The current ownership began in 1995 and has slowly worked their way towards organic viticulture and modern wine making facilities.
